YouTube is testing a bonus that pays Shorts creators for consistency

An invite-only pilot pays a monthly minimum for hitting an upload target, plus a views-based bonus. It's the first concrete piece of the incentive system YouTube promised when it raised the Shorts revenue bar.

YouTube has started testing a Shorts bonus program that pays eligible creators a monthly amount for keeping a consistent upload schedule, with an additional bonus tied to viewership. The pilot is invite-only and limited to select YouTube Partner Program creators in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, according to Net Influencer's reporting on a Creator Insider video and Google's help documentation.

Creators can't apply. Invitations arrive by email or as a YouTube Studio notification, and creators have to accept the program's terms by a stated deadline. To get the minimum payment, a participant must publish a set number of public Shorts in each calendar month; the number is specified in the individual invitation. A separate monthly bonus is based on "valid, engaged Shorts views as determined by Google," and Google's documentation says that bonus isn't guaranteed. Payouts land in the normal monthly payment cycle, and Google can change or end the program, with 30 days' notice in ordinary circumstances.

The context matters more than the pilot. In August, YouTube announced its first major Partner Program changes since 2018. Starting February 1, 2027, only channels with 10 million qualified Shorts views over the trailing 90 days will share in Shorts ad and subscription revenue. Channels below that line stay in YPP and keep earning on long-form. YouTube said it would replace that lost income with incentive programs: "bonuses for YouTube Shopping, incentives for brand deals, and earnings boosts for starting and growing trends."

This consistency bonus looks like the first of those to ship. YouTube hasn't disclosed bonus amounts, how long the test runs, or when it expands, though it says more bonus opportunities are coming to more countries in the coming months.

Why it matters: for small and mid-size Shorts channels, platform pay is shifting from a revenue share you earn automatically to programs you have to be invited into and qualify for each month. That makes direct brand deals and affiliate income more important, not less, for anyone under the 10 million view line.
