The TikTok Shop math: twenty videos beat one, by a lot
A report built on 1.5 million product samples says small creators posting repeatedly drive far more sales per video, and brands are starting to add flat fees on top of commission.
A new report from Omnicom-owned Flywheel, using data from TikTok Shop affiliate software provider Reacher, puts numbers on what TikTok Shop sellers have suspected: volume and repetition win. Digiday covered the findings on October 14.
The funnel is leaky. Based on 1.5 million samples brands sent to creators, only 47% of creators who received a product actually made a video, and only 14% generated sales. Flywheel Ventures CEO Deren Baker told Digiday that brands need to send out thousands of samples at the start to find a pool of affiliates, then narrow down to long-term, repeatable relationships.
The most striking figure is about repetition. When a creator posts a single video about a product, that video drives $7.19 in sales on average. When a creator posts 20 or more videos, each video drives $74.07 on average, or at least $1,481 in total. The report also found that smaller creators tend to generate disproportionately higher sales per 1,000 followers than larger accounts. Baker's explanation was that bigger audiences are used to branded content, so direct response is less efficient there.
Pricing is shifting as a result. TikTok Shop started as a commission-only model, and commission is still the base, but the report recommends brands reward top performers with flat fees or performance bonuses on top. Baker said the line between affiliate creators and sponsored creators is blurring in a way that "wouldn't have been true a year and a half ago."
Why it matters: if you sell on TikTok Shop as an affiliate, one video per product is leaving most of the money on the table. If you've already proven you can move product, that's leverage to ask for a retainer or a flat fee on top of your commission.
